Skwal USA Carver Vs. MR173 (or Thias 173°F)

Postby pete » 24 Sep 2012 00:40

Hello,

Although I'm french speaking, I post this in the english section, since there should be more chances to have a feedback on the SkwalUSA board.

I've been riding a Thias 173°F for a few years now, and I'd like to get a new board. Not that I don't like my Thias anymore, but I've been resisting the envy for a new toy for a while !

Has any of you tried the SkwalUSA Carver 171 prototype that came out last year ? How does it compare to the MR173 (which I'm looking at also), or even better, to a 173°F ?

I ride in Québec, eastern Canada. Mostly hard –sometimes quite icy- groomers, if that can guide you on your advice... we don't have the perfect skwal conditions, as it sometimes lacks some steepness and width.

Thanks a la for your help and feedback !

Pete.

I haven't tried the USA Carver but I can tell you that MR173 is a killer board. It is like Lotus when compared to cars. Or R6 when talking motorcycles. So hard, so fast, so demanding and so rewarding! It is for people who put 110% effort into carving. Even writing this makes me breathe faster.

I am not sure is SkwalUsa is still active. I've been trying to contact them since April with no results.

I must admit that there's a lack of communication. However, I haven't recieved such an input from Thias Balmain, whom I contacted for a feedback on this board.

For the record, Thias collaborated in the development of SkwalUSA. He describes the Carver 171 as follows :
_ 173°F replica, in the spirit and construction
_ Similar softness allowing smooth and cool ride
_ Little less agressive than the MR173

I havent tried SkwalUSA board but as I can heard and as tell by Thias itself, it is less agreessive than MR173 and it dedicated to softer ride...

Yeah that's pretty much what I understand.

I'm kind of afraid I'll find the MR173 too aggressive... maybe I'd go for the RS176 instead.

Not sure if it is OK to ask it like that, but could you please also ask Thias if he knows anything about SkwalUSA current status and if they are going to operate and sell skwals and bindings during this season. I will explain. It might happen that I would have to spend this winter in the USA, but I don't want to carry my skwals, boots and bindings there with me. I'm planning to buy new UPZ RC10 boots there and would gladly buy skwal from SkwalUSA if it would be possible. If not, I think the only option there is CODA or custom order (Donek or Prior for example).

Thanks a lot!

I mentioned the trouble I had getting news from them, but Thias didn't say anything on that matter. Will let you guys know if he does. However, Rodney Mayo (don't know him, he replied to my question on the Facebook skwal community, but he's affiliated to skwalUSA) told me :
Hello, our new line for 2013 will be shipping and available late November 2012. Patrick Thias Balmain would be the best person to give you feedback on the ski. Thanks rodney
